ChatGPT Dots: Power-User Guide to Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare

ChatGPT Dots are always-on personal agents that keep working on tasks between conversations. On November 4, 2026, OpenAI made them generally available to eligible ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces, with an admin preview through November 18. During that window, owners and admins can enable access or opt out before dots turn on by default and billing begins.

What changed on November 4, 2026

OpenAI’s product release notes and the Enterprise and Edu release notes say personal dots can continue working on tasks between conversations. They are generally available to eligible ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces, with an admin preview until November 18, 2026. During the preview, owners and admins can enable access or opt out before dots become available by default. Enabling access does not create dots; each member creates one personal dot through onboarding.

ChatGPT Learn’s November 2–6 recap says GPT-6.1 Terra is now one of the models that power dots, and that admins can review preview access and billing before November 18. For earlier context, see our note on whether OpenAI launched Dots at DevDay in September 2026.

Who can use ChatGPT Dots

The getting started guide lists plan access. Dots are unavailable for workspaces with UAE data or inference residency and are not supported on mobile web. Personal and Business Premium access may take several days to appear.

How an admin enables ChatGPT Dots

The workspace management article says dots require compatible Agent Security policies. In Admin Console > Agent Security > Global > Requirements, allowed approval policies must include on-request, and allowed approval reviewers must include auto-review.

To turn on access:

  1. Open Workspace settings > Permissions & roles.
  2. Select Permissions, then Workspace default.
  3. Open Workspace capabilities.
  4. Find Use dots, then review the dots permissions and computer capabilities.
  5. Save your settings and review any custom roles for the members you want to enable.

Workspace model controls do not apply to dots, and there is no separate setting to turn off proactive research.

Admin permissions

Owners and admins can choose who may use dots, view connections, pause or resume them, and review usage. Owners can also delete personal dots.

Setting What it controls Enterprise note
Use dots Allows members to use dots. Off during the admin preview; admins still control access later.
Add dots to Slack and Microsoft Teams Lets a dot join Slack or Teams and post with its own identity. Teams availability is limited; members finish setup after enablement.
Allow local computer access Lets a dot use local files and run commands. Off by default for Enterprise; the member must connect the computer.
Use custom rules for dots Lets members add or edit action and confirmation rules. Off by default for Enterprise; default action rules still apply.

Cloud browser use, cloud network access, and cloud computer use apply to dots and Work Cloud tasks, even when Work is disabled. Use password manager is separate. Agent Security website lists apply to a dot’s cloud browser.

The inventory shows each dot’s creator, pause status, saved cost tier, dot ID, and Slack or Teams connection. An admin pause stops billing where it applies. Deleting a personal dot removes it from the inventory and pauses its billing. Removing a member does not automatically delete their dot.

How a member creates a personal dot

Create a dot in the iOS or Android app, the desktop app (including Windows), or desktop web.

  1. Open ChatGPT on a supported surface and follow the onboarding prompts, or visit chatgpt.com/dots.
  2. Give it a name. The default handle is @yourname-dot; after naming, it becomes @yourname-agentname.
  3. Connect apps from Customize > Plugins and review permissions first. You can connect Slack from desktop ChatGPT. At launch, a dot cannot have its own standalone email address.
  4. Describe a goal, then review In progress, Scheduled, and Completed activity in the profile.

Pause your own dot from the more options menu in its profile.

Pricing and billing

For eligible Enterprise workspaces, OpenAI says you can pay through flat rates mapped to the type of work, or through scaled consumption. The preview is free from November 4 through November 18, 2026. Starting November 18, billing begins for all enabled dots. Delegated Work or Codex usage is billed separately at standard rates. An admin pause or revoked access stops billing where it applies. The help pages reviewed here do not list dollar amounts.

Access, Slack, residency and HIPAA

A dot has its own cloud computer. Local access starts off: connect a computer in the ChatGPT desktop app and confirm Allow access. The dot can then create Work or Codex tasks, use local skills, and use your local browser when its cloud browser is blocked. Local access is unavailable if Codex or Work policies target a specific operating system.

For Slack, enable both Use dots and Add dots to Slack and Microsoft Teams; a Slack owner may need to approve the app. Only the owner can direct that dot. Phone messaging through iMessage, RCS, or WhatsApp is unavailable for Enterprise. Texting is a U.S. Pro beta and is not supported in Business or Enterprise. A dot cannot call you at launch.

New dots support data residency and Enterprise Key Management, with inference residency in the EU and US. OpenAI’s residency article lists storage support for Australia, Canada, Europe (EEA and Switzerland), India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and inference residency in Europe and the United States. Dots do not support UAE residency. Pre-GA dots move to the required region within 30 days of launch. Dots are HIPAA-eligible in covered workspaces; other features and third-party services keep their own coverage restrictions.

Comparison with other agents

A regular ChatGPT conversation answers when you write to it. A personal dot keeps a cloud computer, works across connected apps, can run reminders or recurring checks, and can research in the background. It can also hand work to ChatGPT Work or Codex, billed at standard rates. Other OpenAI features, such as GPT-Live SIP outbound calling and ChatGPT Images 2.6, remain separate products. See our guides to Perplexity Teammates and Claude Duet for other standing work agents. ChatGPT Dots are one personal agent per member, with a dated admin preview and workspace inventory.
