Did U.S. diesel hit a record $5.85 a gallon?

Yes. On September 4, 2026, the AAA national average price for diesel reached a record $5.85 a gallon, edging past the prior high of about $5.82 set in June 2022.

The average rose from $5.78 the day before and is nearly 60% higher than a year earlier ($3.71). Regular gasoline averaged about $4.15 the same day. Higher diesel costs pressure trucking, groceries, and other goods because diesel powers much of the freight network.
