Does Gemini CLI train on your code?

Gemini CLI can use your code for training if you connect it with a free, unpaid Gemini API key: Google’s Gemini API terms say it uses content and responses from unpaid services to improve its products and machine learning technologies. With paid Gemini API quota or Vertex AI, Google says it does not use your prompts or code to train its models.

As of November 3, 2026, the answer depends on how you sign in. On the unpaid tier, human reviewers may read your input and output, and Google tells users not to submit sensitive or confidential information. On the paid tier, Google logs prompts and responses for a limited time only to detect policy violations. The Google Cloud service terms that cover Vertex AI say Google will not use customer data to train or fine-tune models without permission. In the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK, the paid-tier data rules apply to free use too.

Google also says the Login with Google option stopped working for Gemini CLI on June 18, 2026, for individual, Google AI Pro and Ultra accounts, and points those users to Antigravity CLI.
